UNMARRIED MOTHERS’ HOSTEL
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH PROJECT An extension to the work of the Christchurch Presbyterian Social Service Association was being considered, in the .form of an institution for unmarried mothers, said the association’s secretary (the Rev. T. G. Campbell) yesterday. The association already had a property, and it was quite prepared to use it for the scheme, he said. “At present, we deal in this line of social service work with the help of selected private homes,” said Mr Campbell. The situation was being investigated by separate social service organisations, Which would decide whether the institution would be a hostel or a hostel plus a maternity annex, he said. A shortage of trained workers in this field of social service work had led to the idea of starting a separate order for persons who were prepared to enter this field, said Mr Campbell. It might be necessary for these persons to be given training in the social science department of Victoria University College.
