CLASHES IN KOREA
Attempt To Raid Truce Billets (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright > 'Rec. 11.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, August to. Three hundred South Korean war veterans stormed a United Slates Army compound on WolmiDo Island today in an attempt to capture Communist members of the Neutral Nations Truce Commission team, the United Press reported from Inchon. The rioters were repulsed by tear gas bombs. Heavily-armed American military police, under orders to start shooting if necessary, poured streams pf water from fire hoses on the Koreans. The American guards were equipped with gas masks and wore combat helmets as they stood firm against the angry former South Korean soldiers who surged across an 800-foot long causeway leading to the island compound and tried to force their way into the billets of the Communist truee inspectors. No Americans or Koreans were reported injured In the clash, the second in two days at the island. Seven Americans and 10 Koreans were injured in yesterday’s clashes, which took place before dawn. Today’s rioting was touched off by lorry loads of Korean reinforcements who poured into the area from Seoul.
