HEADQUARTERS FOR RED CROSS

CITY COUNCIL APPROVES PROPOSAL New headquarters for the Red Cross Society at 26 Cashel street were approved by the City Council on Monday evening. The property was in an area zoned for residential purposes, the towiiplanning committee reported. It was hoped that the area would develop for residential, social, cultural and educational purposes: and industry and commerce be excluded. The use proposed by the society came within the scope of the social use and was similar to the use of a property by the Pensioners’ Welfare Association in the same area. In' approving the site.- the council fixed four feet plus orfe-fifth of the height as the distance to which new buildings must be kept from the side and rear boundaries. The establishment of Plunket rooms on the south-east corner of Barrifigtdn and Conway streets was approved by the council. The proposed use could cause no nuisance in the area, which was zoned as residential, the committee stated.
