RADIO DISCUSSION
Sir, —Congratulations to the Broadcasting Service on “Question Mark,” its opposing speakers and Mr Efford for his lucid opposition on capital punishment. While visiting Britain in 1953 I wrote to the Home Secretary pretesting at the death sentence imposed on ITerek Bentley. An illiterate youth of 19 years, he was later executed though actually in the custody of the police when the murder was committed. Such events, and full reports of violence, crime, and footba- 7 pools instead of any foreign news, in the wide-circulation English newspapers. revealed how the people of Britain were so ill-informed as to be blundered into two world wars. These wars have only threatened humanity with far greater dangers than those which they supposed to combat. More radio and press discussion of opposing views would provide a better insurance against war than vainly hoping for soldiers to defend us or save us from communism —Yours, etc., RETURNED SOLDIER. August 9. 1955.
