TREE-PLANTING
Sir, —I recently approached the Canterbury Progress League about treeplanting and was told that the areas I suggested on the plains were too dry and the Saltwater creek area too small. The Conservator of Forests for Canterbury recently said that not sufficient land was available for planting. I pointed out the two areas, thinking the league was the proper organisation to push this forward. There are 1000 acres at one of the places, and. by a rough estimate, 2000 acres in the other. If Canterbury, with its 26 inches of rain, cannot grow trees, how can Otago Central grow them so well? The Selwyn Plantation Board and the Catchment Board have proved it can be done.—Yours, etc., LOUIS E. LAUGESEN. August 9, 1955.
