RACING RACE DELAYED AT RICCARTON
LATE SCRATCHING FOR SECOND LEG Persian Gulf was found to be very lame on arrival at the post before the Selwyn Handicap, the second leg of the double at Riccarton yesterday, and on the advice of the starter he was scratched. Announcements were made over the course speakers that the start would be delayed to allow Persian Gulf’z supporters on the double to exchange their tickets for a runner. There was an immediate response from three in the crowd, but a small time lag until it was announced that three 5s tickets were still being held. Two more bettors went to the windows of the doubles totalisator to make their choice of another runner, but again there was a short delay. Then there was a cheer from the crowd standing in front of the main grandstand as a Chinese pushed his way through clutching a 'Persian Gulf ticket.”
He made the change and the exchanges were completed. The field was brought into line at 3.45 p.m., only 13 minutes after the advertised starting time for the race, and after another short delay for the balance the all-clear was given. Win-and-place investments on Persian Gulf were refunded.
