TIMBER MERCHANTS’ HEADQUARTERS

OLD WELLINGTON HOUSE CONVERTED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 9. A new Dominion centre for the timber processing and selling industry was opened this afternoon in Wellington by the Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan) in the presence of the Prime Minister (Mr Holland).

It will be the headquarters of the New Zealand Timber Merchants’ Federation. a 40-year-old organisation with 190 members scattered throughout the Dominion.

A feature of the building housing the new offices is that it is a standing testimonial to the value of timber as a permanent building material. When the property was bought, it was intended to demolish this house, and erect a completely new building. Members of the executive, however, were surprised at the quality of the timber used in the old house, which was once the property of Sir John Salmond, a Judge of the Supreme Court. It was found that, though the house was 50 years old, its timbers were in perfect condition. The interior lent itself admirably to reconversion.
