LAND IN MINING TOWNSHIPS

LAW ON TITLES TO BE CLARIFIED

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 9. Lack of valid title to land occupied during and since the mining booms on the Thames goldfields and West Coast mining fields almost a century ago is to be corrected by a Mining Titles Registration Bill, a highly technical measure, introduced in the House of Representatives today. The electorates chiefly affected by the legislation are Hauraki, Tauranga, Westland, and Buller. The general purpose of the bill is to provide for the registration under the Land Transfer Act, 1952, of business site and residence site licences and leases of land in mining townships, and the granting of fee-simple titles under that act, or renewable leases under the Land Act, 1948, to the licensees and lessees. The bill will have the effect of eventually bringing such tenures under the Land Transfer Act and conferring on the holders a State-guaranteed title for their interests in the land.

The Minister o( ‘Justice (Mr J. R. Marshall), who was in charge of the bill, said it would be referred to the Lands Committee of the House.
