INDIA’S—POWER
Potential Value Of Atom (Rec. 10 p.m.) , GENEVA, August 8. Atomic energy would substantially relieve India’s power problem because other resources could not provide an American-style standard of living, an Indian official said today. Mr H. J. Eabha. secretary to the Indian Government’s Department of Atomic Energy, was delivering a paper to the international conference : on the peaceful uses of atomic energy. His paper dealt with the pressing l problem of increasing India's power, potential to meet the needs of economic and industrial development. Much of India’s power came from burning wood and agricultural refuse, including cattle dung. . India’s total hydro-electric potential, when fully harnessed, could only deliver about a seventh of the energy derived from burning cattle dung. Mr Bahabha said.
A doubling of the 1953 coal production would only increase the total consumption of energy by about 20 per cent., but India’s reserves of uranium and thorium would be equivalent to 600.000,000.000 tons of coal -more than 15 times the known coal reserves.
