MR E. T. HEAVEN MAY BE APPOINTED ANNOUNCEMENT LIKELY SHORTLY (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 9. When the board of directors of the National Airways Corporation meets this week, Mr E. T. Beaven, of Christchurch, is expected to be appointed by the Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr T. P. Shand) to replace Mr H. Worrall. who resigned early last month because of his disagreement on policy matters. The reappointI ment of the present four directors, whose terms expired on June 30, may also be announced. Under the New Zealand National Airways Act, 1945, provision is made for directors to continue in office until successors are appointed, although their terms may have expired. The chairman (Sir Leonard Isitt) and the vice-chairman <Mr J. S. Hunter) were members of the original board of directors which was apoointed by the Labour Government in 1946 for a term of three years. The others were Mr Worrall and Messrs F. W. Mothes (Whangarei) and W. W. Hynes (Palmerston North).
When the original directors’ terms expired in 1949. the then Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr F. Jones) decided to make no change. His successors. Mr W. S’. Goosman and Mr T. L. Macdonald, carried on the arrangement. In 1952 the board was reconstituted and Messrs Mothes and Hynes were replaced by Mr John Seabrook, of Auckland, and Mr J. G. Jeffery, of Dunedin.
Mr Beaven, who is 58, is a director of Andrews and Beaven, Ltd., and of three other companies. He is a member of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and its air vigilance committee, and was president in 1947. Mr Beaven was a member and later chairman of the Harewood Overseas Terminal Committee until it was wound up, and was a member of the Canterbury International Air Race Council. From 1940 to 1941 he was chairman of the Canterbury-Westland division of the National Party.
