SYDNEY ATOMIC REACTOR
£750,000 CONTRACT LET HEAVY WATER SOUGHT FROM N.Z. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. July 7. A British company, Head. Wrightson’s Processes, Ltd., of Newcastle, England, which has secured the Australian contract to build a nuclear research reactor near Sydney, explained the project in a statement in London last night. The contract is worth £750 000. An official said the reactor will be for heavy water research. The source of the heavy water will be a plant at New Zealand’s hot springs where Head, Wrightson’s is already working. The New Zealand plant will be in production about the same time as that at Lucas Heights, near Sydney, about the middle of 1957, the company spokesman said. The Sydney reactor will not be a heat reactor or a nuclear power plant. But when .‘j it finished, development could take place in that direction.
HEAVY WATER SUPPLIES NO APPLICATION FROM AUSTRALIA (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 7. An official of the Goethermal De-1 velopment Co., Ltd., said today that, New Zealand’s only agreement provides for the sale of heavy water to the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. According to the agreement the United Kingdom Authority must consult the New Zealand Government before using the heavy water for anything but its own research activities. The Prime Minister (Mr Holland) said that no approach had been made by the Australian Government for supplies of New Zealand heavy water.
