WELFARE OF FORMER SERVICEMEN
BIG SUMS DISTRIBUTED BY PATRIOTIC COUNCIL Nearly £9OOO was distributed last year by the Canterbury Patriotic Council for the welfare of men who had served in the armed forces in two world wars and in Korea. A financial statement (August 1, 1954, to May 31, 1955) received by the annual meeting of the council showed that grants to prisoners-of-war amounted to £2471. Hospital comforts bad taken £lO4l, and general grants £1199. Men who had served in the 1914-18 war had received £1529, and payments to men in the 1939-45 war had been £2569. There had been one K Force grant of £5.
