Taxes Blamed For Drop In Smoking
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) VIRGINIA BEACH, June 28. The sharp drop in cigarette consumption in the last two years is due to “ever increasing taxes” rather than the fear of a link between smoking and cancer, representatives of the tobacco industry were told at a convention in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Mr F. M. Parkinson, director of the Tobacco Council, said the council had “ample statistical data” to support such a claim. He called for a halt in the imposition of additional taxes by States or municipalities. Federal taxes on cigarettes average about eight cents a packet. Taxes imposed by States and municipalities vary widely.
