WIN FOR NORTH CANTERBURY

GOLF

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT AT ASHBURTON

After being all square at the end of the foursomes. North Canterbury gained a substantial lead in the singles play to w a the annual golf match against Soutu Canterbury by 15’A matches to 8J at Asti burton yesterday. „ The top four, C. W. Caldwell and M. W. Stanley (North) and I. B. Harvey and. E. G. Kerr (South), were on even terms at the twelfth hole. For the succeeding five holes the players did not produce par figures, but the match ended dramatically when Harvey chipped his third to within an inch of the hole at the eighteenth to give his side a win with a bogey lour. Good putting by C. J. Ward and 1 ■ Lew’s (North) helped materially to give the pair a win over J. B. Forrest and L A Watson. Ward sank a 40ft putt at the fourth for a birdie four, and Lewis took the sixth with a putt from 10 feet to win the hole in four strokes. Consistent golf was played by C. W. Caldwell (North), who beat Forrest, player for South. 2 and 1. Caldwell drove out of bounds at the thirteenth and suffered a two-stroke penalty, but because of excellent putting he finished with 76 off the stick. Forrest’s chipping and punting let him down. With consistent play and safe putting Stanley (North) had an easy win over Harvey, who was hooking and slicing. Stanley went round in 73, par figures. Playing steadily. Ward beat Kerr. He was 1 down at the turn and took the next three holes with two bogeys and a birdie. Ward was three up~at the fourteenth and halved the rest. . W. D. Armstrong was leading L. A. Watson by two strokes with five to play, out there was only one stroke between them at the seventeenth. Watson won the last, hole to square the match.
