Essence Substance Questioned
Because Coumarin, a substance sometimes added to artificial vanilla essence, might be toxic, New Zealand was likely h take the same action as has been taken in America and Australia and prohibit its use, said the Director of the Division of Public Hygiene of the Health Department (Dr. F. S. Mac Lean), Coumarin was used by some manufacturers, but generally was not added to artificial essences for sale, said Dr Mac Lean. There was no truth in any suggestion thei because . this substance artificial vanilla essenc-; would be taken off the market.
