OBITUARY

MR C. S. JOHNSTON Mr Charles Scott Johnston, a noted scorer for senior cricket in Christchurch, died last week. As scorer for the Old Collegians’ Club since 1925, when the club first entered a team in the Canterbury Cricket Association’s senior competition, Mr Johnston had a notable record of service to his club and to the game. Before he took up scoring he was an umpire for nearly 10 years, and umpired the M.C.C. v. Canterbury match in the M.C.C’s 1929-30 tour. Mr Johnston retired from scoring on March 26.

Mr Johnston had served on the management committee of the Boys’ Association. He was a Mason for many years. One son, the late Mr Ken Johnston was the St. Albans and Canterbury scorer for many years, and another son, Mr L. C. Johnston, umpired his first representative matches last season. Mr H. G. Johnston, a third son, will succeed liis father as the Old CoHegians’ scorer.
