CHORAL TRAINING LECTURES

MR STANLEY OLIVER TO SPEAK

Public lectures on choral training and conducting will be given in the Canterbury University College Hall in the lunch-hour next Tuesday and Wednesday by Mr Stanley Oliver, founder and conductor of the Schola Cantorum in Wellington. The lectures, under the auspices of the college music department, are planned for the musical public as well as choir conductors, singers, and music students. Mr Oliver is well known for his work with the Schola Cantorum and his long association with the Music Teachers’ Registration Board and the Federation of Registered Music Teachers in New Zealand; but he had previously gained distinction as the conductor of the Mendelssohn Choir of Montreal, as the director of the vocal and choral department of Alma College, St. Thomas, Ontario, and as organist and choirmaster of St. James’ United Church, Montreal. In his first lecture. Mr Oliver will illustrate general problems of choral training and conducting with the aid of the University Madrigal Group. The second will be illustrated by recordings of the Schola Cantorum lent by the New Zealand Broadcasting Service.
