SHEEP POPULATION

39,000,000 EXPECTED THIS YEAR (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 12. The total number of sheep in New Zealand was expected to increase to 39,000,000 by June 30 and the number of breeding ewes to 25,350.000, said the Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake). The estimated numbers were an increase ove/ last year’s figures of 989,046, or about 2i per cent, for the total sheep and 499,470, or just over 2 per cent., for breeding ewes. “Compared with the figures for five years ago, this year’s estimates for both total sheep and breeding ewes show increases of about 12 per cent,” said the Minister.

He added that the three main reasons for the continued increase in sheep numbers were the rising carrying capacity of hill-country farms brought about by aerial topdressing, better farm management practices, and the favourable wool and meat prices which had been received in recent years.
