SPORTING KEN WINS HANDICAP (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, June 12. Formerly a useful sprinter, Sporting Ken scored his first win over a middle distance on the first day of the Manawatu Racing Club's winter meeting yesterday. Sporting Ken was at good odds in the major event and first leg of the double, the Winter Handicap, of one mile and a quarter. He paid £29 11s 6d and £7. The winner of the open sprint was the consistent Gonfanon, and the double. Sporting Ken-Gonfanon. paid £262 Bs. The attendance was not large. There was an increase of £1236 10s in the totalisator turnover. The machine handled £65,399, compared with £64,162 last year. The track was soft, but provided excellent winter going.
