THIRD DAY AT ELLERSLIE

HIT PARADE WINS STEEPLES FIRST LEG TO PRINCE REGENT The Press’* Special Service AUCKLAND, June 12. The Stratford-owned gelding Hit Parade yesterday gained some compensation for his gallant but unsuccessful run in the Great Northern Steeplechase by winning the £3OOO Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie. He led almost throughout the race. There was loud applause once it became apparent that Hit Parade would not be beaten. That was after he had cleared the last fence. It continued as he ran to the post, and broke out again as he came back to scale. Passionata was a tired second, and Wotan's Gold ran third. Hit Parade took command after six fences had been jumped. His pace and fast, clever jumping were too much for his opponents, and in the middle stages they gained him a very long lead. Passionata was close up as they neared the last fence, but he was done with in a stride or two when they landed. Hit Parade was urged along right to the finish, where he had 10 lengths to spare. Passionata beat Wotan’s Gold by 15 lengths for second.

The each-way favourite. Hit Parade paid £2 10s for a win and £1 12s for a place. Solar Mist was the next bestbacked runner. Extravagant jumping cost him much ground, and he finished fourth.

The £2OOO stake for first brought Hit Parade s earnings to £3975, a good return for the 90 guineas which his ownertrainer. A. M. Hignett, paid for him as a yearling in 1950. Hit Parade raced unsuccessfully at three, four, and five years. He was first trained by F. C. Cleaver, but near the end of his third season he was taken over by Hignett, for whom he showed form almost immediately. He is a rugged seven-year-old gelding bv Probation, and the seventh foal of Adi Thangi, by Whirlwind. York Handicap The eight-year-old gelding Prince Regent added to his list of successes in winter handicaps when he led throughout in the first leg of the double, the York Handicap. He was ridden with good judgment by I. Medcalfe. and just lasted the mile. The final challenge by Peter Willonyx failed by a nose to take the prize. Next behind Peter Willonyx was Smoke Box. Sir Nicholas was fourth. Prince Regent has proved a wonderful investment for his owner-trainer, G. H. Carmont, because he has won a good winter race in each season since he began as a three-year-old in 1949. One of the best of his successes was in the Cornwall Handicap in 1951. The double, Prince Regent and Teina, paid £lBB 18s 6d for £l. Teina’s success was in the Visitors' Handicap, the open sprint. It was her first in open company and "her second at the meeting. She was thiM on the first day. Teina is a four-year-old filly by Fete du Neilly from Satisfied, and is owned and trained by T. W. Reilly, who also saddled up Palford for his success in the Second Fitzroy Handicap. Tribunal was a close second behind Teina, and the rest were beaten off.

Silver Archer repeated his brilliant winning performance of last year in the Campbell Hurdles. As he did last year, he won the Remuera Hurdles on the second day, and finished third in the Great Northern Hurdles.

Conditions were good for winter, although the ground was holding. The weather was fine. The totalisator handled £202,577 10s (including £26,491 10s in doubles), compared with £204,551 10s bn the third day last year. The total investments for the three days were £1,119.330 10s, compared with £1,078,951 5s last year. Results:—
