• AWARD TO AUCKLAND MAN (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 11. A descendant of a missionary family which came to New Zealand in 1836, Mr L. R. Bedggood. has been awarded a doctorate of philosophy by London University. Mr Bedggood is tutor-organiser in Auckland University College's adult education centre in the Waikato area. The first member of the pioner family in New Zealand was the first wheelwright sent to the Dominion to teach the Maoris the trade. He started his work at Waimate North. Mr Bedggood farmed for several years before taking up teaching. A keen sportsman, he has represented Bay of Islands in Rugby, and Auckland. Auckland province and New Zealand Universities at hockey.
