CYCLING

CHRISTCHURCH AMATEUR CLUB

The Christchurch Amateur Cycling Club held an out-and-home 35-mile race on Saturday. Conditions were not good, as there was a fairly strong head wind at times, and light rain during part of the race.

P. Wylie rode an excellent race from the scratch mark to take fastest time. Wylie had the misfortune to puncture, and changed his cycle with G. Hill, who had withdrawn. At the turn, Wylie was half a minute behind the other scratch rider, M. Boers. For about seven miles after the turn Boers held a lead of nearly 200 yards on Wylie, who, from then on, slowl” bridged the gap, and with seven miles to gef he picked up Boers. At this point Wylie left himself open for disqualification, as instead of going to the front when he overtook Boers, he sat on his wheel for nearly two miles. From then on each rider took short laps, and in the final sprint for the line Wylie went into the lead to beat his co-marker by 10 yards.

R. Treloar, the winner, rode a very sound race from the 10-minute mark and was nearly two minutes ahead of his comarker. P. Stanley, at the finish.

The results were:—R. Treloar (lOmin), Ihr 41min 35sec, 1; G. McGregor (13Jmin), Ihr 45min 25sec, 2; P. Stanley (lOmin). 1 hr 43min 26sec, 3; T. Rondel (13Jmin), Ihr 47min, 4: L. Lambert (2min), Ihr 36 min ssec, 5: T. Sexton (2min), Ihr 36mm s.2sec. 6. Fastest time: P. Wylie (scr), Ihr 35min Bsec, 1; M. Boers (scr), Ihr 35min B.4sec, 2.

The Avon Amateur Cycling Club held a 25-mile time trial on Saturday, and incorporated in this race was a sealed handicap event. Conditions were difficult for this class of race.

R. Fowler, the winner of the time trial, did not put up as good a time as he has in the past, but the strong southerly wind for half of the journey slowed up the riders. J. Beere, a newcomer to the club and only a junior, has ridden very consistently this season, and his second place in the time trial was an excellent performance. Beere, on a handicap of seven and a half minutes, took the scaled handicap section of the race. Results:—

Time Trial.—R. Fowler, 60min 26sec, 1; J. Beere, 67min 57sec. 2; N. Raizis, 68min ssec. 3; R. Prince. 70m in 21sec, 4; M. Raizis, 70min 42sec. 5. Sealed handicap: J. Beere (7Jmin), 1; R. Prince (7Jmin), 2; J. Smith (9Jmin), 3; N. Raizis (3jmin), 4. Five Mile Women's Handicap.—J. Kimber (3min), 16min 58sec. 1; B. Kennard (3min), 17min 42sec. 2; W. Chesmar (1J min). 16min 26sec, 3. Fastest time: R. Smith (scr), 15min 57sec.

PAPANUI CLUB Members of the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club competed on Saturday for the first time for the John Limbrey Cup in a handicap event over 35 miles on an out-and-home course. The donor of the cup, Mr John Limbrey, arrived in New Zealand three years ago from England, and although not a champion has ridden consistently with the club since his arrival. Mr Limbrey will leave in August for England, and this cup will be competed for annually.

There was a great tussle between the first two riders home. R. Bryant and K. Cattermole. They broke away from M. Chestnut about four miles from home, and came in nearly three minutes ahead of him. It was a tight finish, and in the last five yards Bryant just managed to gain the lead, and won from Cattermole by a little more than a tyre. J. Spencer, riding from scratch, again took fastest time. The results were:—R. Bryant (lOmin), Ihr 43min 15sec, 1: K. Cattermole (15 min), Ihr 48min 15.2 sec, 2; M. Chestnut (lOmin), Ihr 46min 51sec, 3. Fastest time: J. Spencer (scr), Ihr 36min 57.25 cc.
