WOMAN COUNTY COUNCILLOR

CONFERENCE DELEGATE Cr. C. Carter, of the Hutt County Council, is the only woman delegate to the New Zealand CoUnties Conference, to be held in Christchurch this year. Cr. Carter is the first woman member of the Hutt County Council, and is particularly interested in water and sewerage schemes. She is a member of the Hutt Valley Drainage Board, the Hutt Valley and Bays’ Metropolitan Milk Board, and the Hutt Valley Patriotic Welfare Committee. Mrs Carter is the founder and president of the Anglican Church Embroidery Guild, whose work is now well known in many countries. Six pieces of work valued at £lOOO accompanied the Pan-Pacific delegation to Manila last February. Embroideries designed and worked by Mrs Carter, who is a member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, have been accepted and used by the Queen, the Queen Mother, and Lady Frey berg. At present, at Lady Freyberg’s request, work is being done for the Chapel of St. George at Windsor Castle. Mrs Carter is the daughter of Mr and Mrs C. C. Jackson, of Vai d’Or, Wairarapa. Mrs Jackson, M.8.E., is one of the founders and past president of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers. Four women will attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of County Clerks, which will open on Monday. They are Mrs R. Ballintine (county clerk of Halswell), Mrs D. Lochore (county clerk of Makara), Miss P. J. Porter (county clerk of Springs), and Miss H. S. F. Johnston (county clerk of Waipukurau).
