HORSLEY DOWNS CHURCH
50TH ANNIVERSARY IN JULY
St. Columba Church, at Horsley Downs in the Waikari parish, next month will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. The establishment of the church was suggested by Bishop Julius when he was vicar of Waikari, but he did not remain long enough there to advance it, and Canon J. R. Wilford led the campaign for funds which enabled the church to be consecrated free of debt on July 5, 1905. The cost of the budding and furnishings was £477. Close< associated with the Horsley Downs homestead, the church was built on the site of the station’s blacksmith’s shop, and the’concrete at the doorway is reputed to contain a block used for adjusting ploughs. Formerly the station bell, the church bell was given by the Lance family. To mark the anniversary, the church will open a new concrete-block Sunday school hall and kitchen, costing £1650 with furnishings. The Ven. Archdeacon S. E. Woods will officiate at the ceremony, and Canan W. A. Orange, a former vicar, will preach at the anniversary service.
