Diem’s Offensive In Vietnam
(Rec. 10 p.m.) SAIGON, June 7. Infantry of the South Vietnam National Army plunged knee-deep into the ricefields 80 miles south of Saigon today in an all-out manoeuvre to trap the main forces of the rebel Hoa Hao sect commander, General Tran Van Soai. A briefing officer predicted tonight that the army’s converging lines of infantry will meet by tomorrow in the middle of the 20-mile square rebel area and that General Soai’s men will have been combed out. The National Army, which launched its offensive yesterday with 30 regular battalions, is being acclaimed with enthusiasm everywhere it marches, the officer said. At a cost of eight dead and about 50 wounded, the troops of the Prime Minister (Mr Diem) have killed 60 and taken 10 rebels prisoner. Many rebel wounded had been found in the watery battlefield.
