LYTTELTON FOOTBALL GROUND
Sir, — A resident of Lyttelton with a house overlooking the reclamation has in his possession a map dated 1930, which was an artist’s impression of what this reclaimed land would look like in the future. In the distance is the Naval ■ Depot, with a watch tower, barracks and parade ground. Then there are orderly rows of oil tanks, all the same size, around the sea wall a row of stately trees and in the middle a football ground, hockey ground, tennis courts and a pavilion, all surrounded by trees. This resident had a son aged three and the resident looked forward to the time when the boy would be old enough to play football so that his father could watch his progress. This boy is now 28 years old, but there is a grandson aged four years, and granddad hopes the ground will be ready when this boy is of playable age.—Yours, etc.. ONWARD LYTTELTON. Lyttelton, June 7, 1955.
