DEMAND FOR LAMB MAINTAINED The Smithfield wholesale meat market reopened after the Whitsun holiday to a good demand, according to a report from the London office of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. Moderate pitchings of frozen beef covered requirements at firm levels. Demand for New Zealand lamb was well maintained at unchanged prices, and there was a fair, inquiry for light supplies of New Zealand mutton at firm prices. MELBOURNE Trading was active in the investment section at Melbourne yesterday, and turnover was heavy in selected stocks. Some sharp price variations were recorded, and over-all rises well exceeded falls. Turnover was larger in uranium stocks, and prices were mostly firmer, but oil and gold were easier.
