STUDY OF LABOUR SHORTAGE
PROJECT OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has decided to set up an expert committee to study the current shortage of labour. Advising the annual conference of the North Canterbury district' of Federated Farmers yesterday of this development, the president of, the chamber, Mr R. A. Whitbrock, saicl the chamber was not sure that immigration was the ultimate cure of the problem. In itself immigration created extra demands on housing, education and health services. The stage had been reached inhere the country was over-committed for schools and health services and businessmen and farmers with an optimistic outlook had taken on a programme that resulted in their competing intensely for the small labour force available.
