YORKSHIREMAN’S BIG DAY AT ST. ANNE’S
(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 2. Alan Slater, a 36-year-old Yorkshireman, who has never succeeded in winning his county golf title, was the hero of the Loyal Lytham and St. Anne s course today, when he scored two great victories over top-ranking Americans to reach the last eight of the British amateur championships. Slater, slimly built, showed typical Yorkshire grit. He first gained a 2 and 1 victory over Dale Morey, the 1953 run-ner-up in the American national championship. Then he won a one-hole triumph over Jimmy McHale, a reinstated amateur, who figured in the 1951 Walker Cup side. The day’s play left five Britons in the last eight to challenge three Americans for the title.
