“RING” PRICES FOR CONTRACTS

BRITISH MUNICIPALITIES’ INVESTIGATIONS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 2. Allegations of “rings” and monopolistic practices among suppliers of goods used by municipalities have been investigated recently by the orginisation which represents the municipalities of Britain. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr R. L. Macalister) has received a report from London on the activities of the Association of Municipal Corporations. After an investigation, the association decided to ask the Board of Trade to receive a deputation to discuss the supply of such things as dustbins, salt, street light equipment, bolts; nuts, washers, metal windows and doors, cement, tar, and earthenware pipes. Without implying any criticism of the suppliers, the Bristol City Council caused the association to act. The operation of trade “rings” among electric cable suppliers has been criticised by the Wellington City Council during the last few months.
