WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Sheffield.— Mrs Page presided at the monthly meeting of the Sheffield Country Womens Institute. There was a fair attendance The “likes and dislikes of Women s Institute meetings” contributed by members, showed that the main complaint was that meetings ended too late, and the main compliment, the friendliness of all members. Kirwee.— Mrs D. Westaway presided at the monthly meeting of the Kirwee Country Women’s Institute. An interesting talk was given by Mrs Brown on her recent trip to Great Britain and Europe. Two new members were welcomed. Results of monthly competitions were:— Large bloom: Miss M. Henderson 1. Mrs R. Henderson 2, Mrs D. Westaway 3. Small bloom: Mrs J. Seaton 1, Miss M. Colee 2, Mrs R. Pascoe 3. Chocolate cake: Mrs G. Redmond 1, Mrs Pascoe 2, Mrs G. Gallagher 3. Supper cloth, embroidered: Miss M. Colee 1, Mrs Gallagher and Mrs McMeekan (equal) 2, Miss Henderson 4. Not embroidered: Mrs Redmond. The hostesses were Mesdames Henderson, Seaton, and H. Walker.

Scargill-Motunau.—Mrs J. Gardiner presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Country Women’s Institute. The guest speaker was Mr Lennie, who gave an interesting talk on gardening and compost making. The hostesses were Mesdames Elliot and Harrison. Competition results were:—Large bloom: Mrs Tomlinson 1 and 2, Mrs Elliot 3. Small bloc, i: Mrs E. L. Gibb 1, Mrs Ellilot 2 and 3. Posy of flowers: Mrs Gibb 1, Mrs Gardiner 2. Bowl of autumn leaves: Mrs E. Gibb.

Little River.—Mrs Grant presided over a good attendance at the May meeting of the Little River Country Women’s Institute. One new member and visitors were welcomed. It was decided that the committee make all arrangements for the institute’s twenty-fifth birthday party to be held on July 1. An interesting talk, illustrated with pictures, was given by Mrs I. L. M. Coop on places she visited on her recent trip to Canada as delegate to the A.A.C.W. women’s conference. Competition winners were as follows: Apricot jam: Mrs Ellssher 1, Mrs L. A “Penny for Jennifer” competition raised 10s Id ana was won by Kay Botherway. North Beach.—Visitors and friends were welcomed at the second birthday partv of the North Beach Conutry Women’s InA motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Candy in her recent bereavement. Shoulder sprays were presented by the president (Mrs F. W. Lack), executive officers, representatives of the Christchurch group, and members of the concert party. The birthday cake, made by Mrs H. Helms, was cut by Mrs J. Rennie, a member of the Dominion executive. A feature of the afternoon was a musical programme presented by Mesdames Hoskins, Johnson, Empson, Voller, and Price (songs), with Mrs W. E. Olds as accompanist.

Sumner.—Mrs Lebrun presided at the monthly meeting of the Sumner Country Women’s Institute. Competitions resulted: —large bloom: Mrs Thomas 1, Mrs Mauger 2, Mrs Coleman 3. Small bloom: Mrs Coleman 1, Mrs Mauger 2, Mrs Hodson 3. Head scarf for hospital patient: Mrs Mauger 1, Mrs Allison 2, Mrs Merrells 3. Waipara.—Mrs Thomson presided at the monthly meeting of the Waipara Country Women’s Institute. Miss Merten, repreNorth Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society, gave members an interesting talk. Lincoln:—Mrs Philips presided at the monthly meeting of the Lincoln Country Womens Institute. Mrs Moir gave a report on the Springs-Paparua group meeting. Sprays were presented to Mesdames Davis, Chestney, and Jordan. Comoetitions resulted:—Cornish pasties: Mrs Button 1. Large bloom: Mrs Jordan 1, Mrs Watkins 2, Mrs Philips 3. Small bloom: Mrs Jor°an 1, Mrs Philips 2, Mrs Chapman demonstrated the making of art novelties. Christchurch Centre.—An interesting demonstration of beauty culture was given by Mrs J. Laing at the April meeting of the Christchurch Centre of Women’s Institutes. Monthly competitions were won by Mesdames Londrigan, Barias, R. McLean, Heslip, Auton, G. Hales. Davidson, Prestidge, Russel, McNaughton, Kenny, Ray, Leeming, Miss Lilley. WaikarL—The April meeting of the Walkari Country Women’s Institute was held in the parish hall, Mrs Kellaway presiding. One new member and a visitor were welcomed. Birthdaysprays were presented to three members. Mrs H. Carr again kindly gave bulbs for the competition. A special bring and buy stall did brisk business. Miss Whattman gave an Interesting talk on how to visit England. Results of the potato growing competition were: Mrs Blunden 1, Mrs Hassal 2, Mrs A. T. Earl 3. Kalapol.—There was a good attendance at the May meeting of the Kaiapoi Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Candy presided. A letter of thanks was received from Mr Toomey for a parcel of old linen sent to the lepers. Mrs Dempsey gave a report on the annual meeting held at Sefton recently. A collection was taken up for the Rotary appeal for the aged. A donation was given to the New South Wales flood relief. Miss Brightnell gave an interesting talk on interior decorating. A sketch by Mesdames Schumacker, Spencer, Pearce, and Mr Jowers was enjoyed. Comnetition results were:—large bloom: Mrs R. Hide 1, Mrs Schumacker 2. Small bloom: Mrs Craze 1.
