HEAVY RAIN IN WANGANUI

SLIPS AND WASH OUTS DELAY TRAFFIC (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, June 2. Heavy rain last night and through most of today has caused a series of slips and wash-outs on roads in the Wanganui district. The main north road was blocked by a slip near Kaiiwi, and the main south road was blocked in two places near Kaitoke Hill and between Whangaehu and Turakina. These roads were quickly reopened by Ministry of Works teams. There were several slips and washouts on • the railway line between Wanganui and New Plymouth, mainly between Westmere and Patea. Trains were delayed. Many low-lying areas in and round the city of Wanganui were inundated, but this evening, ,when the rain stopped, the flood could not be regarded as serious. By 8 p.m. the last of the rail slips—that between Patea and Rangikura—had been cleared. At 9 p.m. the piain south road was still clear, but a slip still blocked the main road seven miles north of Wanganui in Goat valley. The road was expected to be opened by midnight.
