U.S. EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTIC

N.Z. OBSERVERS INVITED WASHINGTON, June 1. The State Department announced today that it has invited seven countries with claims in the Antarctic to send obse"- ?rs with a United States expedition to the area in the autumn. The invitations were sent to Britain, France, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina. In announcing the seven invitations, the State Department said it in no way wanted to imply recognition of the claims of these countries to territory in Antarctica. 'The United States has never formally advanced any claim to the area. The expedition will leave in November to begin work on three observation sites in connexion with the International Geophysical Year, 195657. It will establish a main station in the Little America area early next -year. In October, 1956, tractor-drawn sled trains are to move out to builld a second station in Marie Byrd and a third station is to be established a month later near the South Pole.
