CURRENT NOTES

Mrs G. Goodwin, who has been visiting her father. Dr. P. Clennell Fenwick and Mrs Fenwick, Sumner, will leave today by air on her return journey to Nairobi, Kenya, where she is matron of the Lady Northey Home for training nurses, largely according to Plunket methods. Dr. D. J. Dobson and Mrs Dobson and their infant daughter have returned to Christchurch, and have taken up residence in Fendalton. Dr. Dobson, who has been in England for the last four years, is a son of Mr and Mrs Donald Dobson, Fendalton. Miss Gillian Maturin, a 23-year-old New Zealand girl in London, was appointed one of Sir Winston Churchill’s private secretaries for the election period, and may have the post permanently. News of this was received by her mother, Mrs T. J. Maturin, Wellington, formerly of Christchurch, and by her grandfather, Mr A. P. Harper, Wellington. Miss Maturin wrote that she was personally interviewed by Sir Winston Churchill for the position. She is from Christchurch, and left New Zealand two years ago on a working holiday in England. She has been employed by a secretarial agency which supplies girls with temporary positions. One of her most interesting experiences was being sent to Clarence House for a month, and this led to her present position.

The engagement has been announced in Wellington of Mr Julis Joseph Nihotte, only son of the Belgian Minister, Mr Armand Nihotte and Mrs Nihotte, Wellington, to Miss Lenore Daly, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. M. Daly, of Invercargill.
