WINTER MEETING AT ADDINGTON
NAVAL VISITORS ENTERTAINED
The perfect autumn weather on Saturday proved a pleasant surprise for hundreds of Christchurch residents
and added considerably to the enjoyment of the great crowd that attended the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Addington. . It was a great occasion for the club and for its patrons. For the first time in Canterbury a helicopter landed on the ground and it brought to the meeting Rear-Admiral H. M. Burrell, Flag Officer Commanding the Australian Fleet, and Captain G. C. Oldham of H.M.A.S. Sydney. At the appointed time, to the minute, thp heliocopter landed exactly on the appointed space and was greeted with a burst of welcoming cheers, while the band played “Waltzing Matilda” and the club officials greeted their distinguished guests. • J The attendance at the meeting was considerably augmented by many who are not usually interested in- trotting meetings but who were anxious to see the heliocopter land after its flight from Lyttelton. Later the. visitors were entertained at lunch by the president of the club, Mr C. S. Peate, and Mrs Peate, the latter wearing a tailored frock of black wool jersey, a forest green coat and a small green hat to match. Their guests included Rear-Admiral Burrell, Captain Oldham, Mr F, E. Sutton (vicepresident) and his daughter-in-law, Mrs R. G. Sutton, Messrs R. T. McMillan, H. H. Wauchop, W. Milne Shand. V. J. McKibbin, L. S. Smart and L. M. Denton (members of the committee of the dub) and their wives, Mr A. L. Matson (president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference) and Mrs Matson, Mr O. Hutchinson (treasurer of the conference) and Mrs Hutchinson, Mr C. E. Hoy (president of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club) and Mrs Hoy, Mr S. J. Moore (vice-presi-dent of the New Brighton Trotting Club) and Mrs Moore, Sir John and Lady McKenzie, Miss D. E. Cross, whose father is a member of the club’s committee, Mr H. O. Gardiner, a steward of the club, and Mrs Gardiner, and Mr D. C. Parker (secretary) and Mrs Parker. Keen followers of the races were about 12 officers and many other members of the Sydney’s company.
