TROTTING CANTERBURY PARK MEETING

Battalion And Kelso Will Form Strong Bracket

i DAYBREAK EXPECTED TO RACE WELL

■ • The young Methven trainer, H. R. Henderson, appears to hold a strong hand in the Peninsula Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Addington today, with Battalion and Kelso, both of which have created a good impression in the little racing they have had to date'. i Battalion, a three-year-old by Light Brigade from Anita Patch, was far from disgraced when beaten by Legislate at Oamaru a fortnight ago, as he lost about 84 yards at the start. If he begins reasonably well he should not be troubled to win. Kelso was a winner at his first start. He has had one race Since then, finishing well back at Methven after meeting a had check soon after the start. Kelso will prove a worthy second String for the stable, and it will not surprise if he reaches a' place.

. Most opposition to the bracket may come from Reality, Which finished a good fifth in her race at Forbury Park last week. Her trainer-driver, R. Yeung, had no option but to take her to the front with five furlongs to run, and, as she had qovered a good deal of extra ground, it was not surprising that she wilted in the run home. With a more favourable run she should return a dividend. Local Power, which has had one win and three placings in his four most recent appearances, showed speed at the recent Addington trials. If there is to be an upset, the Pacing power gelding could easily cause it.

{Gold Moana, a member of J. J. Brophy’s Pleasant Point team, Toronto Bpy, Dryden Lad and Rosiere make most appeal of the others. <Daybreak and Ailsa Craig will probably dispute favouritism for the Aldington Handicap, a race for improving trotters. At her most recent appearance at New Brighton Daybreak gave Ailsa Craig a start of 24 yards and finished on for second behind her younger rival. Today they will meet on even terms, and with the change in handicaps Daybreak may I Ailsa Craig is one of the fastest yOung trotters seen at Addington for ssme years. She disappointed by breaking at the start of her race at Pprbury Park last Saturday, but showed ability to finish fourth. If she steps out on the right foot, she will extend Daybreak. | Jimmy Pride has trotted useful rices. His second to Scotch Paree last week was a good effort, and, if he rpces as well again, he will have prosThe Prebbleton trainer, A. M. Purdon, has withdrawn Russell Grattan and will be represented by Kowhai, a disappointment at Forbury Park last Saturday. Kowhai will have prospects of reaching a place if she trots solidly. (Honora’s Last, a place-getter at Forbiiry Park, Jocoly, and Lance wood, now a member of M. Holmes’s team, make most appeal of the others. Probationary Driven* Race The Gore-trained Fatima Lady is selected to win the Advance Handicap, race for probationary drivers. She has run some useful races this season and, if her young driver can get the best from her, will have prospects. ♦Light Nurse and Scotch Girl, members of C. R. Berkett’s team, have run useful races recently. Neither will be easy horses for inexperienced drivers to handle, but given a reasonable mn should be prominent The Orari trainer, R. W. Townley, will parade another useful bracket in Jocund and Waitaki Joe. Jocund is expected to be the better. The Dillon Hal] gelding was an impressive winner at Methven at his last start ana it he races as well again, will have better than average prospects. Camille was a convincing winner at Amberley, but failed badly at Oamaru at her only other start She has a fair measure of ability, and, if she works clear without too much effort, could lead throughout, as she is a good front Jjialabella has been disappointing in recent months, and she appears to have trained off. If she is back to her Jj sst .. she = wUI ve to be respected. Grattan Bay, which raced well at the Addington trials, Bight Away and Banbury are others expected to add interest to a very open race. WAIMATE CLUB ANOTHER PERMIT SOUGHT The Waimate Trotting Club, at its : annual meeting, decided to renew its I application for a second permit, and to write to the New Zealand Trotting Con- ; ference asking what prospect there was ! of securing one. The decision was reached after a discussion on the loss of races through the deletion of events for maiden pacers from galloping programmes. Mr T. Darragh said that in South Canterbury alone 12 trotting races, representing one day and a half of racing, had been lost. The president (Mr J. Corrigan) said that the conference was well aware of the position. It was one of the subjects to which the conference would devote a lot of time this year. The granting of extra permits would be considered, but would have to be referred to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr S. W. Smith)! and there might be opposition. He was quite sure every member o< the confer- ; ence would do his best to overcome the [ problem of catering for maiden pacers. Mr J. L Symons suggested that it might be an opportunity for the committee to a PP 1 Y * or an extra day. •The president said the club had already ■ forwarded a statement to the conference ■ that it Intended to apply for another ■ permit when permits became available. After the motion by Messrs D. Keyes • and Symons to apply for the extra day, r Mr K. Rutledge said the club had done r all it could by putting on division races r and adding to the stakes. In the last r two years it had catered for every maiden r horse nominated. r After meeting all expenses and paying r £1237 3s towards the upkeep and imr provement of the racecourse, the club 4 had a profit of £29 3s 6d. The dividend 1 Totalizator Agency Board was B £1513. B membership was 565, the report B stated. B The following officers were elected:— president, Mr J. Corrigan; vice-presidents, Messrs U W. Davison and K. Rutledge;
