Provisional plans for utilising the upstairs portion of the Somerset Hotel were presented to the Ashburton Licensing Trust by Mr W. Thomas, architect, this week. The plans provided for 36 guest beds, two beds for a manager and eight for staff, at a cost of about £7OOO. Mr Thomas asked for clarification of various items to enable him to prepare final plans. The financial statement showed that the bank overdraft at May 20 was £113,012, plus unpresentea cheques, making a total of £121,889 compared with £130,510 at the same time last year.
"The chairman, Mr G. Kelly, congratulated the secretary, Mr C. Moody, on the annual accounts which, he said, could not be released until they were audited. Mr Moody reported that because of the likely effect of the- London dock strike on supplies of spirits from the United Kingom he had doubled up on orders of some lines of whisky so that the trust would not be caught witl\ short stocks.
The chairman and secretary were authorised to visit the Invercargill trust to discuss trading methods, administration and the formation of an association for licensing trusts in New Zealand.
