HASTY MARRIAGES CONDEMNED
“Harmful' To Family Unity” (.Rec. 8 p.m.) EDINBURGH, May 19. The majority of runaway marriages are condemned as “hasty and irresponsible actions” harmful to family unity and happy home life, in a report by the Church of Scotland committee on the church and the nation to be presented to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh next week. - The report says that the Church must feel considerable anxiety at the action of young couples who marry against their parents’ wishes away from home, often taking advantage of the difference between the marriage law in Scotland and that prevailing in the rest of Britain.
“The word ‘romance’ is often used to cloak selfishness and careless disregard of family loyalty and duty. A young couple determined on marriage, at any cost and in any circumstances, forget the immense value of beginning their marriage life with the goodwill of their respective families/’ says the report.
