Campaign Notes

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, May 20. Speaking at Walthamstow, London, last night, Sir Winston Churchill said one of the first things to be discussed with Russia at the top-level talks was the effects of hydrogen and atomic bomb tests. Later, at nearby Loughton, he answered allegations that Sir Anthony Eden had “pushed him out.” He said: “I gave up my office because I thought it my duty/ I thought it would be right for me to go in a way which would leave my successor to choose for himself the moment of the election and the programme for which he will be responsible.” Conservatives “Shrimps.”— The former Labour Minister of Defence (Mr Emanuel Shinwell), speaking at Shotton, Durham, said: “How can anybody expect we can impart any excitement into this election when Labour is fighting a collection of shrimps? At the last General Election we had to fight Sir Winston Churchill. That was something to get our teeth into; but this time we are fighting Snow White and the seven dwarfs.” “Rather Quiet.” —The deputy Labour leader, Mr Herbert Morrison, addressed a South London meeting last night of 23 women, one man, and one young child. He said: “This is a rather quiet election. I wish it was a bit more lively.” Reason for Election. — Sir Anthony Eden told a crowd of 4000 in Glasgow that he had called the election because, if Britain were going into important negotiations, those involved would wish to know they were speaking for the nation without any doubt. Conservative Policy.— -Mr Attlee told factory workers at Blackburn (Lancashire) that in all the Labour Budgets between 1945 and 1951 there had been a shift towards more money for the less well-to-do and less money for those with plenty already. In the last three and a half years things had changed, he said. There were few representatives of the working class in the Conservative Party, Mr Attlee added.
