CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Harrison, wife of LieutenantColonel J. B. Harrison, who has been appointed controller of Government House and military secretary to the Governor-General, is a New Zealander who, since her marriage has lived in India, Ceylon, England, and for the last seven years in Wellington. Formerly Miss Rhona Holden, of Nelson, Mrs Harrison trained as a nurse in the Wellington Hospital, and just before the outbreak of the second world war she went to England and served in London for a time with the Queen Alexandra Imperial Nursing Service. Her husband, an Englishman, served in the Indian Army. Colonel and Mrs Harrison have two daughters aged 14 and 11. Mr W. F. Grant, a former director of rural taxation, British Inland Revenue Department, and Mrs Grant will arrive in Christchurch from Wanaka on Monday and will leave on Wednesday for Wellington. Miss Nancye E. Burt, the Nelson girl who holds the world’s record for shorthand and typing speeds, is to leave for Britain in the Ruahine at the end of this month. She will enter as a student of Pitman’s College, London, in typing championships to be held in Monaco in the south of France in July. The annual meeting of the Canterbury North provincial executive of the Women’s Division of the Federated Farmers was held in Rangiora. Mrs M. E. Orchard presided. Reports were read on the various activities during the year. The election of officers resulted:—president, Mrs M. D. Frizzell: vice-presidents, Mrs W. Skurr, Mrs E. M. Gibson and Miss J. Smith; secretary-treasurer and housekeepers secretary, Mrs R. O. Bowman; committee, Mrs Loffhanger, Mrs E. Shea and Mrs Martin; advisory members, Miss J. Smith and Mrs Gibson; organiser, Mrs C. Mclntosh; representative Te Kiteroa committee, Mrs Harper; co-ordinating committee, Mrs Frizzell and Miss Smith. The death has occurred in London of Kate Cutler, a star of musical comedy in the latter part of the last century. She was 84. Among the shows that she played in were “Floradora,” “The French Maid.” “Little Nobody” and “A Chinese Honeymoon.” The May meeting of the garden circle of the Somerfield Townswomen’s Guild was held in the Somerfield Community Hall. A demonstration on the making of floral sprays was given by the leader (Mrs McFadden). Results of the competions were:—decorative, Mrs McNicol 1, Mrs Nicholls and Mrs Smart (equal) 2, Mrs McFadden 3; best bloom, Mrs McNicol 1, Mrs Nicholls 2, Miss Nairn and Mrs Smart (equal) 3; best shrub, Mrs McNichol 1, Mrs Nicholls 2, Mrs Harwood 3; three beetroot, Mrs Coventry 1, Mrs Smart 2, Mrs Harwood 3. Mrs B. Hayes presided at the May meeting of the Beckenham Townswomen’s Guild and gave a special welcome to new members. Reports were given by Mrs C. Ironside (area and civic), Mrs Hilditch (gardening), Mrs J. Steinmetz (arts and crafts), Mrs R. Allisqn (choir), and Mrs Wright (drama). Mrs Wright also read a letter from the link guild at Tolworth, England. Elocutionary items were given by Mrs Molly Hall. A competition was won by Mrs J. Steinmetz, with Mesdames R. Allison and M. Robinson (equal) secohd. Miss Brightmore gave an illustrated talk on furnishings. Miss Hardie Draper, of Blockhouse Bay, Auckland, died on Tuesday in her one hundredth year. Born in Nottingham, England, she came to New Zealand with her parents 65 years ago. She had been a school teacher and a Sunday school teacher, and was greatly interested in the work of the Church of England. Mrs Eustace presided at the May meeting of the Kaiapoi Plunket Mothers’ Club. Arrangements were made for a dressmaking course to be conducted by Miss Ray Robins, of the Adult Education Department of Canterbury College. Mrs Eustace introduced Miss J. Wauchop from the Vocational Guidance Centre, . Christchurch, who gave an instructive talk on the work of her department and also answered questions. Competitions resulted as follows: pair knitted gloves, Mrs Grofski; comish pasty, Mrs Price; chrysanthemum, Mrs Roberts. Mrs K. Baker, president, reported at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi sub-centre of the Red Cross Society that she and Mrs Blackwell had visited the building in Christchurch which the centre hoped to buy for use as its headquarters. A donation of £4O was made towards the building fund, making a total to date’ of £5O. After the business the meeting took the form of an afternoon social and small presentations were made to Miss Griffiths and Mrs Stocking, two members with very long service to the Red Cross Society, on the occasion of their birthdays. Both are octogenarians. Afternoon tea was served, and songs were sung by Mrs Enid Baker. The Flag Officer Commanding the Australian Fleet (Rear-Admiral H. M. Burrell, C.8.E., R.A.N.), the Commanding Officer of,H.M.A.S. Sydney (Captain G. C. Oldham, D.S.C., R.A.N.), and Mrs Oldham and fifty of Sydney’s officers will be guests at the Navy League’s annual ball at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus, Montreal street, Thursday, May 26.
