SKI-ING

CHAMPIONSHIP DATES FIXED Dates and locations of the New Zealand and North and South Island ski-ing championships were fixed at a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Ski Association yesterday. The New Zealand titles will be decided at Queenstown from August 6 to 11. The North Island championships will be held at Ruapehu on September 24 and 25, and the South Island meeting will be at Mount Cheeseman on September 10 and 11. The council decided to allow clubs and associations which organise the national championships to retain the entry fees. Applications for the affiliation of three new clubs were received by the council. According to the official handbook of the association, which has just been issued, there were 34 clubs affiliated with the association in January. They had a membership of about 5000. The three new clubs are all from the Ruapehu area, where there are now 11 ski huts and plans for another eight. The handbook lists 21 huts in the South Island, including eight in Canterbury, and 18 in the North Island. Advice of the setting up of an advisory committee to plan the development of the Coronet Peak ski-ing grounds near Queenstown was received from the Minister of Tourist and Health Resorts (Mr E. H. Halstead). The committee, consisting of representatives of the department, in whom the area has been vested, skiers, the Queenstown Borough Council, the Lakes County Council, and the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company, will attend to the location of new ski huts, road access, traffic control, and associated matters. The representative of the skiers is Mr George Cochrane, secretary of the Southern Districts Ski Association. The road into the field has already been bulldozed to the width of a twolane highway, and will be metalled before the winter ski-ing season begins.
