HALSWELL PUBLIC TELEPHONE
3D CHARGE FOR CALLS CRITICISED No justification for the 3d charge made for calls from the Halswell public telephone booth can be seen by the chairman of the Halswell County Council (Mr J. Mackenzie). At a meeting of the council, a letter advising that the charge had been reduced from 4d to 3d was received from the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine), who is member of Parliament for the district. “I do not see any justification for the 3d charge,” said Mr Mackenzie. “There are certain slot telephones in the city which are further out than the Halswell one, but the charge in them is only 2d. I think the 3d is wrong-—it is too much to charge.”
