OVERSEAS WAR WORKERS

ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL MEETING The thirtieth annual meeting of members of the Overseas Women War Workers’ Association was held on Saturday in. Christchurch. There was a very good attendance. “I used to think that, with the passage of time, our numbers would decrease and that we should disband—before we dwindled to one,’’ said Miss Fanny Wilson, who was matron at Walton-on-Thames in the 1914-18 War. and is a vice-president of the association. “But it is pleasant to see that we older members are being joined by overseas workers in the Second World War and that our numbers are increasing.” Members and visitors were received by Miss J. R. Okey (president) and Miss A. C. Fleming (honorary secretary), and Miss Okey presided at the meeting.

The following letter from the New Zealand Patriotic Fund Board was read: “The Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council referred to us a letter. inquiring if accommodation was provided for former servicewomen in the new Rannerdale Home. No provision for former servicewomen has been made in the building, but our architects are at present preparing plans for alterations to a large house on the Riccarton property to provide bed-sitting rooms for the maximum number of servicewomen, with a community dining room, etc. It is anticipated that approximately 12 residents could be accommodated, but no definite advice can be given in this connexion until the plans are received from the architect.’’

Members expressed satisfaction with the proposed accommodation for servicewomen as far as it went, but many were disappointed to learn that no provision was being made for giving nursing attention to former servicewomen such as that provided for former servicemen at Rannerdale Home. They felt that if, while occupying a proposed bed-sitting room, they fell ill, they would have no alternative but to enter hospital. They had hoped for treatment such as was given to former Servicemen i Members expressed gratitude to Miss Okfey arid. Miss Fleming for their interest in the association, and particularly commended Miss Fleming for her kindness to sick members. It was-de-cided to send a letter of greeting to Miss A.
