■Mrs J. C. Laing (Aikmans road) will leave Lyttelton by the Sydney Star in the second week in May, for a visit to England.

At her studio in Rugby street on Saturday evening Madame Rennell gave a farewell recital in honour of Mr and Mrs Alex Scott, of Knowles street, who will leave for a trip to England early next month. The singing, mostly by advanced pupils, was of a high standard and was much enjoyed by the 70 guests. The monthly meeting of the Red-diffs-Sumner Garden Club took the form of a visit to the garden of Mr Lawrence E. Smith, Richmond Hill. Mrs H. Griffiths presided at a meeting of the Riccarton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Mrs F. Smith, the delegate, gave a report of the sixty-eighth Dominion conference held in Invercargill.

The annual meeting of the Opawa branch of the British Sailors’ Society was held at the home of Dr. D. E. Hansen. Members from Christchurch, Lyttelton, and Sumner guilds were welcomed. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted. Mrs G. W. C. Smithson, president of the Christchurch guild, congratulated the committee on its contmued effort to send its quota of £25 to the institute at Lyttelton. The following officers were re-elected: president, Mrs D. E. Hanmi; secretary, Mrs J. K. Stuart; treasmer, Mrs G. B. Morgan.

The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Home Economics Association: president, Miss E. D. Killner; vice-presidents, Mrs L. Hollings and Miss C. E. Wardle; secre-tary-treasurer, Mrs R. W. Borland; committee, Mesdames C. Hudson, I. E. Whittle. G. Willis, G. J. H. Harton, B. E. Menzies, O. M. Marshall, E. L. Lord, H. Macdonald, D. A. Stephens, R. P. O’Brien, L. M. Conway, W. Werren, and M. H. Matson. Songs were sung by Mrs Anne Lee. The hostesses were members of the outgoing committee.

Mrs W. Pattison presided at the monthly meeting of the executive committee of the Canterbury Federation of Country Women’s Institutes. Sympathy was expressed with ivirs Candy and Mrs Petheran. The voluntary organisers’ reports on attending annual meetings of institutes said that most institutes were making good progress. Mrs Macßae’s resignation as a voluntary organiser was received with regret. Mrs Prebble gave a report on the recent floral art school conducted by Mr Bellworthy. More than 60 members attended the recent recital of the Christchurch Recorded Music Society. The president (Mr A. Nettleton) spoke on the meeting of the Federation of Recorded Music Societies held in Hamilton, and read a letter from the Earl of Harewood, who is patron of the federation. The April meeting of the Halswell Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs G. J. ten Hove, Kennedy’s Bush road. Mrs J. Watling presided. The guest speaker, Mrs N. W. Gale, gave a demonstration of decorative work Competition results were: cut bloom, Mrs Pickering 1, Mrs Slack 2; decorative, A class, Mrs Slack 1. Miss Walling 2, Mrs Pickering 3; B class, Mrs McCracken 1.

Mrs Petrie presided at the April meeting of the Addington Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs Abbott gave an interesting talk on India. A competition for an Easter egg was won by Mrs McMorran The hostesses were Mesdames McMorran, Searle, Hunter and King. At the annual meeting of the women’s committee of the Returned Services’ Association the following officers were elected: president, Mrs M. E McCreanor; vice-presidents, Mes> dames R. Bach and W. Pole; secretarytreasurer, Mrs D. Donaldson; committee, Mesdames W. Proctor, A. Offord, A. Bond, W. Keller, K. Clark. GPearce, D. Williams, R. Southon, A. Walter, E. Fielding, E. Mahah, R. Chapman and Marsh.

Mrs M. G. Scott presided at the monthly meeting of the Gold Star Mothers’ Club. A successful bring and buy sale was held. Mrs M. E. Taylor gave an interesting account of her recent trip through England.

Mrs N. Dailey presided at the monthly meeting of the Oxford branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Mrs H. Griffiths, the district president, presented the branch with a trophy won by the junior members for increased membership figures. A report on the Dominion conference in Invercargill was given by Mrs Dailey. The seventeenth birthday party of the Central Townswomen’s Guild was celebrated at the April meeting. Mrs E. B. Kav presided. Shoulder-sprays made by the gardening circle members were presented to the president, secretary. and treasurer, also to members of the retiring committee, former presidents, and leaders of circles. Items were given by the singing circle, under the leadership of Mrs Cairns-Bell. A humorous play was presented by the drama circle, under the direction of Mrs 4 Spedding. Afternoon tea was served by members of the committee. Mrs Howie lit the candles on the birthday cake, which was cut by Mrs E. Hodge.

Mrs B. Hayes presided at the April meeting of the Beckenham Townswomen’s Guild when progress reports of the guild’s activities were given bi Mrs W. Grenfell (area), Mrs Hill (gardening), Mrs J. Steinmetz (arts and crafts), Mrs R. Allison (choir), Mrs C Ironside (civic), and Mrs Wrighl (drama). Appreciation of the work of Mrs I. Lester, who has been secretary for four years, was expressed. Mrs Ironside and Mrs Grenfell were appointed delegates to the area committee, Mrs V. Moir and Mrs D. Clephane hospital visitors, and Mrs A. Thomson vice-president from the committee. It was decided to make a contribution to Heritage. The guest speaker was Miss K. J. Scotter, ol the Burwood Girls’ Training Centre, and Mrs K. L. Hoshach sang with Mrs W. Grieve as accompanist. Mrs Thomson thanked the speaker and artists. Competition winners were Mrs Jackson 1, Mrs Ironside 2, Mrs Hilditch 3.

The Dunedin committee of the Save the Children Fund has forwarded £lO to the Kenya branch of the fund. It was also reported at the recent meeting that eight cases of clothing had been packed and were ready for despatch.
