FREEDOM OF TRADE
Sir, —Congratulations to Mr BoydClark for ventilating his views on freedom of trade and also the ‘'The Press” for its article on the subject. I think it correct to assume that when the electors returned the National Party to power they did so because they were in favour of free enterprise; but the outcome has been the antithesis of free enterprise, no. Decause the Government lacks the will to enforce that policy, but because it is impossible to do so in face of thousands of business men, banded together in their associations, and listing prices which their members dare not ignore. The policy of these associations is not maximum service at minimum cost but the reverse. It is all very well to blame governments for the rise in prices; but what can any government do to control the rapacity of so many thousands of business men so thoroughly entrenched?—Yours, etc., HIRAM HUNTER.
