RACING Pinnacle Ridge Beats Fulgent At Blenheim

"Th* Press" Special Service

BLENHEIM, April 24. Fresh from her victory in the Hawke’s Bay Cup a week earlier, the Foxton mare. Pinnacle. Ridge, carried too many guns for her opposition in the Marlborough Cup on Saturday. The pace was slow at first, and Pinnacle Ridge was up behind the pacemaking Royal Scrip six furlongs from home and she headed him on the home turn. Fulgent challenged, but she held him easily. Sports Edition, forced wide all the way, came home well for third. Sleipnir improved on his Tauherenikau third to complete the totalisator double in the Weld Handicap. The combination paid £l5 15s. The meeting opened at Waterlea on Saturday before a large attendance. The day, though overcast, remained fine. The track was fast after a slight overnight shower. The totalisator handled £28,705 10s, against £25,478 10s last year, an increase of £3227. Eastern Friend, winner of the Pelorus Hack Handicap, was swabbed as a routine measure. Imprudent Beats Novices After waiting on Marette to the straight. Imprudent shot away quickly outside the furlong in the Novice Stakes and won rather convincingly. Heads and noses separated Inaugural (which lost a good position early and finished well), Nicosia (always wide out), Royal Quest and Marette. Craig and Minnie Mouse lost all chance at the start. Sea Front tried to lead throughout in the Waterlea High Weight, but Special Edition had his measure entering the straight. Shaking off a challenge from True Gold, which ran greenly under pressure, Special Edition came away in the last 50 yards. Full Tilt, after drifting early, came on for third. The rest were well beaten. Lucky Sal was too good for the less-experienced King of Joy in the Juvenile Handicap, though the latter got up on the fence to be on terms with the favourite inside the last furlong. Lucky Sal came away nicely under pressure, and showed some class. King of Joy was a comfortable second, ahead of the early pacemaker, Melman, which hung right off the track turning for home. Desert Cloud ran on to shade Uitimax for fourth. The Cup Race No runner wanted to make the pace in the Marlborough Cup with the result that Royal Scrip led the field along slowly over the first half-mile from Qualify (hanging badly at the turns), Fulgent, Pinnacle Ridge, Michael Brierly, Sports Edition and Bon Soir. Qualify dropped away with six furlongs to run, Pinnacle Ridge improved to take the trail as the pace quickened. There was a gap of three lengths to Michael Brierly, Sports Edition and Fulgent, racing abreast. Pinnacle Ridge was alongside the pacemaker going across the top and Royal Scrip tired soon afterward. Pinnacle Ridge straightened up three lengths clear of Fulgent and Royal Scrip, with Sports Edition improving very wide out. Fulgent made no impression on the favourite in the last furlong and Pinnacle Ridge won comfortably. Sports Edition, which took a little time to get balanced in the straight, ?ut in a late bid to beat Royal Scrip by a nose, with Michael Brierly two lengths away. Foghorn was next. The favourite. Cups, began slowly in the Pelorus Hack Handicap, and he never recovered. It was later disclosed that he was shinsore. Manresa delayed the start and was left, while Sabette shot away to be six lengths clear down the back, and still five lengths ahead of Kataban. Wishbone and Cool Air into line. Sabette looked unbeatable, but Eastern Friend, seventh in line, came with a spectacular run along the outside fence to catch the fading pacemaker right on the line.

Wishbone just hung on to beat the fast-finishing Cool Air for third, and Kataban weakened to fifth. Beau Ray Wins

Sideha led for the first six furlongs of the Flaxbourne Handicap, but Beau Ray joined her on the turn, and he was just clear into the line. However, he was carried rather wide, and Dahlia, which had been trailing, shot through on the fence to lead by nearly a length at the furlong. Beau Ray fought back in the gamest fashion to wrest a halfhead decision. They were clear of Dividend, which took third on tne post from Triumphal Star. Lights On, Lady Jess and Sleipnir X er ® eft®®** back at th e start oi Weld Handicap, and Johnny Peep and Easy Way were soon four lengths clear of Incomparable, Clara’s Revenge, and Adversary. However, Sleipnir streaked round the bunch to Join the leaders at the half-mile, and he led for home clear of the tiring Johnny Peep, which appeared to slightly check both Clara’s Revenge and the improving Rio Negro. That the way easier for Sleipnir, put the whole field converged on him inside the last furlong, and he had to be shaken up to beat the favourites, Rio Negro and Clara’s Revenge. Then came Incomparable, Relinquish (second last into line), Sanford (hampered for room), and Viewfield, almost u 1 j j’ a. Easy Way and Adversary headed the remainder. Incredible, Enfold and Sassenach u r ”?, at . Pacemaking in the Hack Handicap, but when Enfold took Over coming into line she seemed to be assured of success. However. J? 1 ”* worked out of an awkward Portion and passed the Trentham filly at the half-distance, only to succumb m *'iE n i° ifopooi, which came wide Out ttom second last to gain a photo decision. Mt Etna and Enfold tilled the minor placings, with Incredible and Jesse James close by them.
