PUBLIC SERVICE CADETS
Sir,—Some years ago five boys joined the Public Service together. It was immediately apparent to all that there was only one local avenue of promotion, so that unless some were prepared to move, the five would be on the basic grade for some years. So all resigned from time to time as a vacancy that would suit them occurred in private industry. Recently, at a private reunion, they compared cases and found that their salaries ranged from £9BO to £1350. Had they remained in the service, they would have been on £720, with one on £785. I think that is the simple and obvious answer the Public Service Commission is seeking in its survey of recent resignations. I suggest that the commission should stop wasting time on surveys and vamp up its scales to cater for merit and economic necessity.—Yours, etc., SIMPLE SIMON. April 22, 1955.
