ANZAC DAY
Sir, —“Challis’s” letter calls for reexamination and revision of the Anzac Day issue. “Men who willingly gave their lives for liberty” or, “We have obligations to our dead” are hackneyed, empty phrases that don’t ring true; and in fact are not true. World War I was said to be fought against the German Kaiser’s militarism. It ended with the introduction of conscription in Great Britain. Conscripts don’t give their lives willingly; and New Zealand is the most militaristic country in the world, a virtue suitable for home consumption only. Heroism is an armchair euphemism for massacre. That is the story of Gallipoli, not so presented in text books and pious speeches.—Yours, etc., NO MORE WAR PREPARATIONS. April 22, 1955.
