Olympic Games Medal
A medallion for the Olympic Games in Melbourne next year has been designed by a Hungarian, Mr Ander Meszaros, who now lives in Australia. The bronze medallion is two inches and a-half in diameter. Its obverse side shows an athlete bearing the Olympic flag, surrounded by the Olympic motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (“Swifter, Higher, Stronger”). Around the edge of the medallion march athletes of many lands. The reverseside shows the coat of arms of the City of Melbourne, in the five Olympic circles which represent the continents of the world. Mr Meszaros designed the commemorative medallion for the 1949 Olympic Games; the silver altar in Canterbury Cathedral, England; and the Canterbury Series of medallions which have since been purchased by 18 museums. In 1951, Mr Meszaros won the S.I.D.E.M. (International Federation of Editors of Medallions) award for his work which is recognised as the highest award in the world for medallions.
