AMENITIES AT GREENPARK

COMPLAINTS BY HUT OWNERS

LACK OF ELECTRICITY - AND WATER

Lack of electric power, water supply, and a-convenient mail service are causing dissatisfaction among residents at Greenpark, a few miles from Motukarara, and a similar distance from the shores Of Lake Ellesmere. Speaking for six permanent residents in huts at Greenpark and several farmers, one of the hut owners, Mr R. Schultz, said that power reticulation extended to within two miles of the huts on Hudson’s road, which ran from Lincoln. There were 30 huts in the area. Of these, six were peniianently taken, and the rest were used mainly at week-ends by fishermen and duck shootersMr Schultz said the permanent residents and three farmers on Hudson's road had been battling for about five years to have the power supply extended. About 12 months ago, a list had been made of those who required power, but nothing had been heard since then. The member of ParllaInent for the district (the Minister of Railways, Mr J. K. McAlpine) had also been approached. The hats have no permanent water supply. According to Mr Schultz, the residents, including some with children, have to go some distance to a well on a farmer’s property when they are unable to collect water themselves in dry weather. Some, he said, did their washing in the middle of a paddock; others carted water in milk cans from the well. Only through the generosity of the farmer were they able to get water at all, Mr Schultz said.

He also complained that the mall delivery was unsatisfactory. It stopped a mile from his home, though he paid for the serveie, he said. He would not mind so much if mail wa, delivered to the end of Hudson’s road, about 400 yards away from his home. Mr Schultz and his wife, who are both pensioners, feel they will have to move when they are a little older, because of the lack of facilities. They are concerned about where they can go then. He thought the huts-would also be used more by visitors if better services were available, said Mr Schultz.
